over fall break i help my community by picking up trash at the beach.
ReplyDeleteI actually think a did a lot of things that helped my community over the break, but I'll only share about two of them. For one, I attended a meeting/gathering with my mom for her work. This event was beneficial to the community because of the reason WHY we were all gathered. My mom works for a non-profit organization called "Child and Family Services." This organization helps children and families "get back on track". For example, one time, they helped out a single pregnant lady with a 13 year old son, and with the organization's help, the lady gave birth to a healthy baby, and now the lady attends college while the 13 year-old son goes to school. We all gathered to thank the sponsors and people that donated to the organization. Another thing that I did over this break was participate in different non-profit organization called "Self-help Housing". I actually participate in this program every Saturday and Sunday, but since there were two Saturdays and two Sundays this break, I went four times. The organization helps people build houses on their own (actually with the help of a small group of people). My mom and dad have been a part of this program for over a year, and I think that by me going to work on the house, I'm benefiting the community by keeping this business in business!
ReplyDeleteGO PAISLEY!!! :)
Deleteum.. i do not think that did a lot to help my community but i helped my dad clean the yard and a couple of neighbors yard, because why not?
ReplyDeleteOver the break I did not do a lot to help my community. I think I could have helped out a lot more with my community, but one thing I did do over break to help my community is I picked up little pieces of trash around my house. This may not have helped my community a lot, but even the littlest things can make a difference. I think this contributed to my community because I tried to better my own house, the place where I live. If everybody in my community picked up little pieces of trash around their own houses, eventually the neighborhood would look cleaner because everybody took care of their area.
ReplyDeleteThis fall break I didn't do much to help the community that I live in, but I did go out and help other communities like: Maunalaha (mostly HKM), ʻAihualama, and Kahaluʻu where my ʻohana's farm is located.
ReplyDeleteOn some of the days I went to HKM and cleaned pretty much everything accept inside the classrooms. I power washed all of the hallways so that they looked clean (and trust me, they are a LOT more dirty than you'd think), and on another day I went with the lawn mower and weed whacker and cleared all the grassy areas on the campus. I feel like cleaning the campus gave me a deeper appreciation for what we have as HKM students as far as our campus on this uʻi-ful ʻāina, next to a kahawai, surrounded by nature. I think that if all of the haumāna were to have to do what I did, and clean most of the campus by themselves then they'd have this want to keep it maiau and mālama it whenever they can. I feel the same way whenever I see Papa Loʻi go off to ʻAihualama, and I'm just hoping that everything that they're doing there (the students) is pono because I know the blood, sweat, and work that my ʻohana along with many former HKM haumāna and their ʻohana's have put to make ʻAihualama what it is today. This break I went up there a few times, and just checked the water flow, and make sure that everything was maikaʻi. That wahi just has something about it that will completely bring you to tranquility; even if you're having the worst day ever, just going there will bring peace to your soul and the ability to realign yourself. True TAROpy :)
Another thing I did was go to my ʻohana farm in Kahaluʻu with my papa to help mālama the mea kanu there, and take care of the ʻāina that will one day belong to me. There I helped my papa with mālama(ing) the kalo since he isn't super familiar with that. So while there we when huki some, replant, pull weeds, mulch, and a lot more. What was my favorite part was when we finished and we took all the kalo we when huki and brought it home and my tūtū made kalo paʻa for us and we all ate it with our dinner that night as a family. It was pretty great.
In conclusion, that is what I did over fall break and I know that as I come back into school this week, I'm coming back with a whole new appreciation for the things we have and for this life that we live. :)
Aloha this is Mahina and i think how i helped my community is by picking up trash at Makaha beach and Patrick pond. But I don't think i helped the community so i cleaned my yard. I had a conversation about the community with my grandpa and we talked about how we can help the community and how we can make it look better.....and this is mahina
ReplyDeleteI planted trees with my brothers. We planted five coffee trees and five papaya trees
ReplyDeleteThis fall break I help out with Roosevelt High School with there last game and ended their season good. Also I clean up the football stadium at RHS and when the boys had there senior night. I did score sheet and Libero check on the game RHS vs Kalani. I've bin going them for about 9 sets. Cleaning up and helping the refs play the game that's a good way to help someone and the community. Also I like helping the people that I really enjoy working with.
ReplyDeleteOver this break, a couple of friends and I helped my community by cleaning a local swimming area known as tin roof. Tin roof is a pond area up in the back of Kalihi valley. Locals go there to cool off on a hot day. It's surrounded by trees and it derives from another one more up stream known as ice pond. There is a small waterfall
ReplyDeleteand the pond itself isn't too big.
I went there recently with a couple of friends, and we noticed a lot of trash that was left there. We decided to make sure it was clean because we didn't want the water and it's surroundings to be polluted so we could use it in the future. We started by putting all the rubbish in my friends duffle bag so we could dispose of it later then we unclogged all of the river type areas, by removing the leaves and sticks that drifted there, and were stopped by rocks. We made sure there wasn't any big rubbish around that would harm the wellbeing of this beautiful area when we scoped out the entrance and the path. Luckily everything was small enough to be removed by hand.
The reason I decide to help this area is because it's a place I've been able to enjoy myself at. I also go there a lot and so I'd like to enjoy it more, cleaning it will help me make sure I can. Also because I think it would be amazing if when I have children of my own, that i'd be able to take them there one day.
I think this benefits my community because it is a well known place to many of the locals in Kalihi and I'm sure that them being able to enjoy it longer will insure the fact that they will come back. Cleaning up the streams and the pond will make sure the water won't become polluted, therefore making sure i, and others can enjoy ourselves as often as we want. My friends and I also took the chance to enlighten others and got a few kids to help us out with the cleaning process. They go to public schools and they told me that this wasn't normal for them.
Aloha e ku'u mau hoa papa,
ReplyDeleteOver fall break i did a couple of things that benifited my community, such as on Wedsnday Oct 7, 2015., From 7-9pm. My mother was the host of a candidate meeting held every other wedsnday at Pilila'au recreation center in Wai'anae. This is the 3 week of the candidate forum. She did this to give the candidates who are running to represent O'ahua a chance for them to share why they think they deserve the chance to rep us, to answer a couple of community questions, see what their components have knowledge of and their opponents strengths and weakness, etc.
So how I took a part of this is I was the set up and clean up crew, the extra "man"(girl) who did what ever else needed to do or filled in for someone who was not able to make it or had to change their positions last minute, and I was also the peson who collected the questions from the crouwed that night. Some people that I knew before this candidate forum who are looking to be elected were 'anakala Poka (a radio station host; who has discussions about native Hawaiian rights and about the Hawaiian community, etc. Both international and local), 'anake Carren (moms side of the 'ohana), 'anake Hina Wong Kalu (Kumu, kumu hula, cultural partitioner, community leader, a romdel to most, etc), 'anake Kelea (Pomaika'is mom from HKM, educated on many things, lol dont remember what else), and others who are running.
I guess I could say that I helped the candidates who are running to represent us from the island of O'ahu, the communitys of O'ahu, my makuahine, and the people who went out to show support or interest in knowning and wanting to educated the candidates. Why? Well because I can say I had a part of this history of a small portion of the movement of our kingdom and nation. And that I am in a way in support of this organization, also that I am in support of what my makuahine is doing (even though most times its last miniute but in help of the community.)
A personal impact that I had after participating in this event. From listening to the questions that the audiance had and the candidates answers or solutions for the questions, then made me realize so many things that I may have known from before but didn't accept. Such as it made me think about my future more deeply on what I want to succed in, how i need to plan ahead, etc. This also had an affect on me because I got the oppurtunity to hear our possible candidates in te future share their plans with us what kind of impact they will have when they becaome on of 23 representitives for O'ahu and possibly all of the Hawai'i islands...
And in conclusion, that is what I did this fall break to support my community.
He po maika'i ia 'oukou pakahi.(: <3
i help out my community by doing the ualaka'a clean up
ReplyDeleteI helped my community over fall break by joining in the cleaning of King Intermediate. The event was from 12-4 and we took out all the unnecessary things and brought them to the dump.- This is Waimea
ReplyDeleteI helped out my community over fall breack by doing the tantalus community clean up.To help make sure that the enviorment was clean.
ReplyDeleteOver Fall Break I have contributed to my community by watching my brothers and cousin Nainoa. This was not an organization, but my relatives. I was able to connect a bit more with my cousin since I donʻt really spend time with him. What I learned is that heʻs participating in soccer (The Hurricanes) and cub scouts. This helped out my community because they were able to get errands and work finished. Also that itʻs helped by keeping the boyʻs noise level at bay so neighbors would not be disturbed by the ruckus.
ReplyDeleteThis volunteering has made an impact on me because it made me realize something. It snapped me back to reality and look where I am. Iʻm halfway through high school and I barely spend time with my relatives. So it made me change and want to try and create memories with my brothers and cousin because I never know if Iʻll see them after I graduate from Halau Ku Mana.

ReplyDeleteA way that I have helped the community this fall break is on this past wednesday when my dance group had a work day at King Intermediate and I helped by lifting thing into the van to take to the dump. This has helped the community because it has cleaned up our dance space and has made it a more clean clear environment to learn. This is how I helped the community during my spring break
ReplyDeleteover this break i stayed at my best friends house in saltlake an hung out with him and went out almost every night and did teenager things we did a lot of sports activity also like basketball and running
ReplyDeleteone thing that i did that benefited his community was help this old lady that helped my friend when he broke his leg on his skate bored i helped her bye lifting stuff around her house and moving them
What i did this Fall break to help out my community is plan out what me and my family is gonna do to help clean up our back yard. What we planned to do or make me do is attack the back yard and take out all the weeds and plants that donʻt be long in our back yard and level out the grass and the dirt so we can put a huge shed in the backyard.
ReplyDeleteThe first move in our plan was to get 17 bags of sand that weighed about 15 pounds, and buying 72 cement tic tac toe blocks, and a wheel barrel and a small shed for the new tools we got like a pic axe, a Hoe, iron rake, soft rake, shovel, machete and the pounder... by doing these tasks we can finally attack the back..... so during the break i hand picked small weeds and used a machete... i also did more but i want to present it rather then type it.
Over this past fall break I did many things, like ride my bike, play video games, do math homework, but one thing I did for my community is I along with my friend Thinh Nguyen cut down invasive saplings near my grandmas house. There is a stream that runs behind my grandmas house, and it connects to the Ala Wai canal. There is a wall above the stream in my grandmas backyard that you can walk along to the street. The problem was that some haole koa saplings popped up and eventually blocked the path. My friend Thinh and I noticed this and decided that we would cut them down and take the roots out, so we did. This made a positive impact in my community because by clearing the invasive species people are able to walk along the path again.
